Wavefront – Better Than Conventional LASIK Eye Surgery

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 by MICE Editor

Traditional LASIK surgery achieves a simple correction of focusing power by reshaping the cornea with the aid of a laser. Wavefront LASIK is a variation of that conventional procedure and accomplishes a spatially varying correction based on readings from a wavefront sensor. In essence, a wavefront sensor measures the eye itself. It detects any aberrations by directing a weak laser source into the eye, and by sampling and processing the reflection off the retina.

Wavefront measurements reveal the irregularities of the lens, which cause optical aberrations (any deviation from a desired perfect planar wavefront). Wavefront custom sculpts the cornea to accomplish corrected vision. In many ways, Wavefront offers better results than traditional LASIK. The procedure is carried out by an ophthalmologist, with the aid of sophisticated computer-controlled equipment.

LASIK has certain potential side effects including halos or glare, which are caused due to induced spherical aberration. Wavefront has helped reduce instances of such cases where patients complain of post-operative halos or glares. A drop in such complaints is owing to the precise measurements provided by the wavefront sensor.

Thus Wavefront can help achieve a more optically perfect eye, since the corneal tissue area to be carved is measured more precisely using advanced technology and tools. But, wavefront aberrations are not the sole cause for all types of vision impairments. Therefore, Wavefront LASIK should not be treated as a panacea for all kinds of vision defects. However, eye surgeons claim that a great deal of success has been accomplished in patient satisfaction, relative to earlier refractive surgery procedures.

Though wavefront technology has been used for years by astronomers who require adjusting their telescope optics, its application to human vision has been discovered only recently. It’s true that Wavefront is a superior procedure, but it’s certainly not required by or suitable for everyone. It is imperative that you go through an elaborate wavefront diagnostic to determine if you are a potential candidate for it.

2006-2007 Goal Setting Incentives For New School Year

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 by MICE Editor

The time is almost here for your child to go back to school. How can we make this year this best that it can be? In the next few paragraphs I will give you some ideas that will improve the educational experience for your child.

If this year is going to be more successful than last year, something has to change. I am going to advise you to focus on just three areas to improve your childs’ attitude and aptitude in school. These are the three areas I advise you to concentrate on: Goal setting, reading, and incentives.

Goal Setting

Before the new school year starts, you as a parent, should sit down with your child and discuss the previous years progress in school. At this time you need to positively encourage and praise the accomplishments of the previous year. I know that you are creative enough to find positive feedback. Then it is important that you discuss the importance of having a written plan for the start of a new year.

This is where you introduce the idea of goal setting. Talk about the importance of knowledge and how much power it gives us over those who are not educated. Let your child know that you think education is important. Be real and sensitive with your child as you share your own educational experiences with them.

Then the two of you need to write down at least three realistic short term and two long term goals for the up coming year. If you are like most of us you are thinking… like what. That depends on the child. If you have a child that is in the second grade and they read on the fifth grade level, then you may want to challenge your child to read books of his or her choice that are at the sixth grade reading level. However if they are already a strong reader, you may want to challenge them to spend more time reading science or social studies material. Make the goal specific. (Read magazine articles about science in the first week of school for thirty minutes every other day)

Short term goals should address the weaknesses, that you are aware of, from the previous year. If spelling was a problem then set a realistic goal to be able to spell a specific number of new words each week.

Long term goals on the other hand should deal with outcomes. They should also deal with the ability to do something rather than just having knowledge. A basketball player learns to pass, dribble and shoot. A long term goal would be the ability to actually play the game. A sixth grader needs to know about the scientific method. The long term goal would be using the scientific method to either prove or disprove a theory. Post your goals on the bulletin board or refrigerator in your house.

Reading

I can not over emphasise the importance of encouraging your child to read. You can not start too early. Every one preaches about reading to your infant and that is important. But, we must get our children to transition from being read to, to reading for either knowledge or entertainment. I include entertainment because of the importance of having good early experiences in reading. Not only will this help your children comprehend more but it will also help them write better!

Incentive

I can hear you now. “How do I get my child to actually do anything? I can’t even get him to make up his bed or empty the trash.” It is at this point that I inform you that if they are young it is easy. All you have to do is work on their value system. Continually lead by example so that your young child will know that you value education. It is amazing how much they want to be like us when they are little. Do you remember when your child had that play lawn mower and wanted to mow just like dad. Well, let me tell you. If your child does not see you reading and leading by example then it will be very difficult to convince them that they should value education.

On the other hand, if they are already in middle school, you may have to work even harder. Because now your child will not think it is important just because you say it is. It will take a very creative parent to make fun and games into learning experiences that will enhance a childs’ education. Now you have to be creative enough to make it fun. I can not over emphasise the importance of making sure that your child has a value in education. Very few people do anything if they do not believe in it.

Let’s review our keys to success, If we want this school year to be a great learning experience for our child we must put a plan in place by setting short and long term goals. If we do this we will send a great message to our child. They will know that we our willing to invest our time in helping them have a productive year. We must also make reading available and fun for them. And in order for this plan to work we must make sure they have incentives to actually do the work.

Here is to you! A toast, “May you and your children have a productive, educational, and fulfilling year.”

Investing in China Tax Incentives Offered by the Chinese Government

Monday, August 27th, 2007 by MICE Editor

The People’s Republic of China offers a variety of tax breaks and financial incentives to encourage inbound investment.

National government incentives vary based on how much money you are investing and whether or not your project is located in one of China’s special economic zones; local incentives vary by jurisdiction according to relative bargaining power. The tendency in recent years has been for China’s central and western provinces, who have been starved of foreign investment in comparison with well-fed coastal cities like Shanghai and Beijing, to offer incentive packages that are considerably more generous than those offered to foreign investors ‘back east’. The national government is now actively encouraging foreign investors to pour money into China’s relatively undeveloped hinterlands in order to spread wealth more evenly throughout the country and stem the flow of economic migrants to the coast.

China’s standard corporate tax rate is set at 30%. However, in certain locations the rate can decrease dramatically. Enterprises located in certain areas designated as “open to foreign investment” pay only 24%. The favored children among overseas investors, however, are enterprises located in national-level economic and technical development zones, such as certain industrial parks like Suzhou Industrial Park (near Shanghai) and California Industrial City (in central China). They enjoy a permanent corporate tax rate of only 15% – but even that rate only kicks in during the sixth profit-making year. The rate is zero for these enterprises during their first two profit-making years, and rises to only 7.5% for the following three years, before returning to 15% for the sixth year. Any enterprise classified by the P.R.C. government as a “Technologically Advanced Enterprise” or an “Export Oriented Enterprise” (an enterprise with an export value of at least 70% of its production value during any given year) enjoy a corporate tax rate of only 10% for their sixth through tenth profit-making years.

China offers further tax incentives for enterprises that reinvest their profits domestically, and these incentives operate in addition to rather than in replacement of the above tax incentives. In particular, enterprises that reinvest their profits to increase their own capital or to establish or invest in another foreign invested enterprise in China are eligible for a refund of 40% of the corporate taxes already paid on those reinvested profits. The refund rate rises to 100% if the enterprise in which profits are reinvested is classified as a Technologically Advanced Enterprise or Export Oriented Enterprise. This refund must be returned, however, if the reinvested finds are withdrawn within five years.

The foregoing description is not exhaustive – China offers various other investment incentives. That was the good news; the better news is that incentives are offered not only by the national government but also by provincial and local governments that compete fiercely with each other for a slice of China’s lucrative foreign investment pie. But that’s another article.
