Direct Marketing VS Conventional Advertising

Friday, September 14th, 2007 by MICE Editor

There has always been a great debate between businesses and account executives that sell advertising. Which is better; direct marketing or conventional print advertising? Does one pull in more customers than the other?

Is one more cost effective than the other? And what is conventional advertising anyway? Well, for starters let’s call conventional advertising things like; yellow page advertising, local radio and local newspaper display ads.

Direct marketing of course is direct mail pieces being sent to the customer’s home or business. Direct-mail marketing can also be in the form of those package coupon mailings that are often sent out. Each type of advertising probably has its place and its best strategies for your particular type of business.

Do direct marketing mailings cost less than conventional print advertising? Actually, for the number of impressions in the customer’s mind the answer would be no. However, carefully designed coupons in these mailing packages do result in a large number of new customers coming into your business; more so then an advertising display ad in the newspaper.

Direct mail marketing works and it works quite well and for the price it probably is a better value for most types of businesses, so perhaps you will consider all this in 2006.

Don’t Assume You Can’t Do it, Just Because Conventional Wisdom Says you Can’t

Monday, September 10th, 2007 by MICE Editor

Be weary and leery when it comes to standardized tests and things of that nature that attempt to gauge your intelligence, aptitude, or ability to achieve at your given goal or dreams.

Please don’t misunderstand me, such things can and do have their place and even be quite effective in steering a person towards the right career path, classes to take in college, or which educational degree to pursue.

The flip side of the coin, however; is that they can also end up being terribly fatalistic with regards to what you believe you’re suited for, career wise, starting your own business, etc., or personally capable of achieving for that matter!

I can’t help but wonder how many people have fallen victim to such things simply because they believed such tests to be all knowing.

Along the same lines, what about how many people were literally discouraged from doing something they might otherwise have thoroughly enjoyed doing. Perhaps through shear perseverance they might have even come to excel in the given area. One might cite Albert Einstein as such an example. Following his early years in education one would have been hard pressed to assume he’d earn the label of “genius”.

The problem as I see it, strictly from my observations and personal experience with a number of “great achievers” if you will, is that absolute love and excitement for what you do is far more often what leads to one’s eventual success and achievements in a given area. Rarely is it how someone may, or may not have scored on a given test.

I’d like to use myself as an example. The simple fact is if you were to look at absolutely any of my tests, etc. and judge me solely on that basis you’d say there was no way I’d have been fortunate enough to experience many of the things I’ve done.

Please don’t assume I am tooting my own horn here, ok? The point I am trying to make is simply this…

The tests may have been correct. I might have been “better suited” in other areas of life. Things might have come easier in the short run had I chosen another career choice.

The thing is that I wanted to take my own path so much, that through my own life experiences I was able to figure my way around many of the stumbling blocks I’ve run into.

Certainly I’ve made my share of mistakes. I’ve missed the boat on a whole lot of opportunities as well I’d bet. Perhaps things might have even been a bit easier had I followed the advice of others and the tests I’d taken. The thing is though, I’d have missed so much.

I’d have missed a whole lot of happiness along the way as well. Perhaps most of all, I’d have missed sharing this very writing with you. My friend, follow your dream even when conventional wisdom might suggest otherwise.

Shooting Holes Through Conventional Thinking

Monday, September 10th, 2007 by MICE Editor

Whenever I hear that “everybody knows” something, I can’t help but be suspicious. After all, everyone once knew the Earth was flat, that humans couldn’t fly, and that time was a constant throughout the universe. It’s no different in the field of internet marketing.

For example, I myself slipped into thinking that the average person couldn’t possibly make money off Google AdSense, I sure ended up swallowing my words, when I discovered that bidding for certain keywords was going through the roof, at $30-$60 a click!

Well, maybe a blog that centers on the right luxury keywords can make average marketers money, after all.

Another bit of conventional thinking about marketing on the Internet is that you can’t get listed on Google in under a season. I can’t guarantee that you can. But, maneuvers to that effect have been put forward.

The simplest is rather startling. Just make a search for your URL (website address) on Google.

Can internet marketing be that be that simple? In a word, NO! (Of course, if that sounds like conventional thinking, you might want to question it.)

The point isn’t whether a marketing maneuver works especially well or not. It’s nice when things work. But, few techniques work all the time. And, many loopholes get shut-down soon after being popularized.

However, these little techniques help marketers uncover other techniques. And, every little bit helps.

“Is taking advantage of loopholes ethical?” some may ask. I say, “Of course.” The Internet is nothing but an array of computations and relationships. Their rearrangement and analysis is, at worst inevitable. At best, that’s the whole point. And, it isn’t fair to expect only rich multi-national corporations to be able to reap the benefits.

This brings to mind another bit of conventional thinking. It’s said that you’ve got to have a hot product or service to make money on the Internet.

Oh, come onsome will say. That’s not conventional thinking; that’s common sense! Oh, is it, really!?

It’s not such common sense when one recalls a top-selling product called Everything Men Know About Women. The author had a lot of fun touring and selling this now famous book. If you run into it, you won’t be surprised by the title on the cover, but the fact that the pages inside are completely blank may make you smile.

So, the product’s value is a matter of opinion. But, on some level, one must admit that there’s simply no there there!

If you’re an internet marketer in search of a product to sell, could you think of a way to apply this idea to your niche? Perhaps Everything Republicans Know About Good Government? Everything Dog Lovers Know About Good Taste? Everything Conventional Thinkers Know About Internet Marketing?

About G. Saintiny: G. Saintiny is a conceptual artist who has long been fascinated at how words and signals spell order and power on the Internet. It’s only after years of fascination and research that knowledge rewarded such curiosity. “I truly believe anyone can create success on the Internet,” says Saintiny. “With the right resources and tools, that is.”
